Unfortunately for Kentucky, the Kansas loss was apparently not low enough. The Wildcats dropped their third consecutive game Sunday in a loss to a Georgia Tech team that had lost its first two games of the season to Georgia State and Mercer. The defeat gave Kentucky just its second three-game losing streak in John Calipari's 12 seasons as coach. Kentucky's abysmal 3-point shooting had drawn much of the attention after losses to Richmond and Kansas, but that was not the problem Sunday.

The Wildcats converted 8 of 19 3-point shots, almost matching their nine made 3s in the first three games. Freshmen Brandon Boston and Terrence Clarke hit their first 3s of the season, combining to go 6 for 11 from beyond the arc.

More: Should UK basketball fans worry about slow start? Here are reasons for concern, optimism. Despite that effective shooting, Georgia Tech cruised to the win by turning 21 Kentucky turnovers into 33 points. UK is averaging The plays if you look at them, they have an easy play but they try to do something tough. Calipari had lauded his team's defense in the first two losses, but Georgia Tech shot After looking like Kentucky's most effective offensive weapon for much of the first three games, Olivier Sarr was unable to impact the game against the Yellow Jackets.

Foul trouble was not an issue for Sarr like against Kansas. He was on the court for 30 minutes but totaled just 6 points and three rebounds. He hit 1 of 4 shots. Freshman forward Isaiah Jackson contributed 12 rebounds and four assists but totaled just 9 points as Kentucky's guards struggled to feed the ball into the post against Georgia Tech's zone.

Seven of the points from Sarr and Jackson came in the final with the game already out of hand. We should have done that from the beginning of the game. They went small and it bothered us. It did. They spread the court on us and made it harder. Earlier: After back-to-back losses, Kentucky basketball searching for fix to stagnant offense.

Freshman point guard Devin Askew struggled again with just 3 points and one assist, but graduate transfer Davion Mintz staked a claim for the starting job with six assists and two turnovers. He added three rebounds and three assists while hitting 3 of 4 3-point attempts.

While Clarke must avoid falling into the trap of trying to do too much by turning every possession into a one-on-one matchup, he also looks like a better option than Askew to be Kentucky's primary ball-handler. Calipari seems convinced that for Kentucky to reach its potential Askew has to work through his early struggles, but he also has to avoid ruining Askew's confidence. Moving Mintz into a starting role or letting Clarke play with the ball in his hands more could alleviate some of that pressure.

Whether he starts or not, Mintz figures to take on a key leadership role as one of the only healthy players on the team who has experienced the difficulty of a college season before.

Guys I feel are going to have to be willing and understand — including myself — that we have to change something. Just continue to fight.

If you ask a college basketball fan to name the best squads of all time, chances are you'll hear some of the same names: the Indiana Hoosiers, the Duke Blue Devils, the UCLA Bruins. As Matthew Goodman writes in his wonderful new book, The City Gamethere's a reason for that: The team's championships were overshadowed by a point-shaving scandal that engulfed not just CCNY but also several other schools across the nation in the early s.

Goodman's book is a fascinating look at a team full of talented young men who torpedoed their careers because they were unable to resist the lure of easy money. They "operated something like a five-man jazz combo, with each player improvising off a few basic patterns They were also a diverse team in an era when racism and anti-Semitism ran rampant: The team was composed of 11 Jewish players and four African Americans; all of them were the children of immigrants.

While the players were unquestionably thrilled to get the chance to play for "the working-class Harvard," there was still an air of resentment on the part of the students.

Many chafed against Holman, an "arrogant and aloof" man who routinely verbally abused his players, Goodman writes. And the students weren't happy that they were made to do their own laundry on road trips while their coaches opted for dry-cleaning and fancy steak dinners. So it wasn't surprising when some of the team's players were lured into a point-shaving operation. Point-shaving involves players deliberately missing shots and blocks in order to keep the point margin below the spread; basketball, where the scores are typically high and the pace of the game is fast, is more prone to point-shaving than other sports.

For some of the players — "not all of them poor but none of them rich" — it proved irresistible. Some longed to support their families living in overcrowded tenements; others were drawn into the scheme by peer pressure: "I wanted the guys to like me," explained Irwin Dambrot, a small forward on the team.

Unfortunately for the Beavers, the point-shaving plot happened to occur at the same time as another gambling scandal, one that would eventually bring down New York Mayor William O'Dwyer. The city's district attorneys became obsessed with finding and prosecuting bookmakers, and it wasn't long before they discovered that college players were routinely shaving points. CCNY got hit particularly hard: "The entire starting five of the City College double-championship squad had now been arrested, along with the top two reserves," Goodman writes.

Goodman's book is at once a history of the CCNY team's remarkable championship season and the less remarkable one after that as well as a close look at organized crime and police corruption in post-WWII New York. Goodman does a wonderful job recounting the Beavers' games — fans of the game will find much to love in his play-by-play descriptions of CCNY's march to the championships, but you don't need to be a hardcore basketball fan to keep up.

He also proves to be excellent at providing historical context for the scandal. The background makes the fallout from the players' arrests all the more heartbreaking: Students, Goodman writes, "would no longer flock to the Garden to watch their team play; everyone understood that this portion of their lives, and of the life of their school, had come to an end. Goodman follows the students in the years after the scandal: "They lived with dignity but also with a lingering sense of shame and anger and frustration.

Their story, they always believed, was far larger than they were. Goodman doesn't let the players off the hook, but writes about them with a real sympathy: They were essentially kids who paid a harsh price for making admittedly poor decisions, he argues. The CCNY point-shaving scandal remains, decades after it happened, a heartbreaking story of venality, and Goodman turns out to be the perfect author to tell it.

This led to multiple BBL teams such as Essex Leopards, Birmingham Bullets and the Manchester Giants pulling out of the league, with some franchises folding completely under the financial strain.

After sell-out crowds at Wembley Arena in and ; the BBL play-off finals took place in front of record crowds at the 02 Arena in London. If the offensive team puts the ball into play behind the mid-court line, it has ten seconds to get the ball over the mid-court line. Once the offensive team gets the ball over the mid-court line, it can no longer have possession of the ball in the area behind the midcourt line.

The ball is moved down the court toward the basket by passing or dribbling. The team with the ball is called the offense. The team without the ball is called the defense.

If a basket, or field goal, is made outside of the three-point arc, then that basket is worth three points. A free throw is worth one point. Fouling a shooter always results in two or three free throws being awarded the shooter, depending upon where he was when he shot.

If he was beyond the three-point line, then he gets three shots. Once that number is reached, then the player who was fouled is awarded a '1-and-1' opportunity. If he makes his first free throw, he gets to attempt a second. If he misses the first shot, the ball is live on the rebound. In high school and below, the halves are divided into eight and sometimes, six minute quarters.

In the pros, quarters are twelve minutes long. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, then overtime periods of various lengths are played until a winner emerges.

A referee will toss the ball up between the two. The player that gets his hands on the ball will tip it to a teammate. This is called a tip-off. In addition to stealing the ball from an opposing player, there are other ways for a team to get the ball.

Personal foul penalties: If a player is shooting while a being fouled, then he gets two free throws if his shot doesn't go in, but only one free throw if his shot does go in. An offensive foul that is committed when a player pushes or runs over a defensive player. The ball is given to the team that the foul was committed upon. Blocking is illegal personal contact resulting from a defender not establishing position in time to prevent an opponent's drive to the basket. Flagrant foul. Violent contact with an opponent.

This includes hitting, kicking, and punching. This type of foul results in free throws plus the offense retaining possession of the ball after the free throws. Intentional foul. When a player makes physical contact with another player with no reasonable effort to steal the ball. It is a judgment call for the officials. Technical foul.
